Cataract surgery

A comprehensive, 2-day cataract surgery course designed for ophthalmologists and veterinarians looking to elevate their surgical skills. The course combines a solid theoretical foundation with a unique training system, utilizing state-of-the-art simulation technologies and hands-on practice on eye models using a phacoemulsificator and a surgical microscope. Under the guidance of the scientific director and experienced instructors, you will go through all stages of the procedure—from theory and simulation to practical workshop training—all within a small group of specialists.
 
The cataract surgery course covers two key modules:

Module 1: An interactive lecture

An interactive lecture where you will gain comprehensive knowledge in:
 
  • anesthesia methods prior to cataract surgery,
     
  • phacoemulsification devices,
     
  • surgical instruments,
     
  • pre-operative preparation,
     
  • main port techniques,
     
  • viscoelastics,
     
  • capsulorhexis,
     
  • hydrodissection and hydrodelineation,
     
  • lens nucleus removal depending on cataract hardness,
     
  • irrigation and aspiration (I&A), IOL implantation,
     
  • post-operative care,
     
  • complex cases,
     
  • management of complications.
Module 2: Wetlabs

Intensive wetlab sessions, where participants perfect their surgical techniques in a laboratory environment:
 
    • VR TRAINING – advanced exercises on the Eyesi® Surgical simulator;
       
    • WETLAB – hands-on practice on eye models using a phacoemulsificator, an operating microscope, professional surgical instruments, and medical supplies.

Scientific director:

Michał Milka, MD, PhD – Specialist in ophthalmology, surgeon specializing in anterior segment surgery. He possesses many years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, corneal and retinal diseases, disorders of the ocular adnexa, dry eye syndrome, and other ocular conditions.
 
Senior Assistant at the Department of Ophthalmology with an Operating Suite, Subdepartment of Refractive Surgery, and Subdepartment of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the St. Barbara Regional Specialist Hospital No. 5 in Sosnowiec. Since 2015, he has collaborated with the “Szpital Pod Bukami” Ophthalmology Clinic in Bielsko-Biała, where he performs ophthalmic microsurgery procedures. Lecturer at the Centrum Edukacji i Badań Interdyscyplinarnych Uniwersytetu Śląskiego. He is the author and co-author of dozens of presented papers and published scientific articles, as well as a co-author and translator of books in the field of clinical ophthalmology.
 
Graduate of the Medical University of Silesia, where in 2014 he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled: “The Use of Femtosecond Laser in Cornea Grafts for Patients with Keratoconus.” He completed his residency in ophthalmology under the supervision of Professor Edward Wylęgała, MD, PhD, at the Clinical Department of Ophthalmology with the Subdepartment of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Szpital Kolejowy in Katowice.
